Flying Fury campaign

Flying Fury is a single player campaign based on the memoirs of Major James McCudden, Flying Fury, Five years in the R.F.C.

Because user made campaigns aren’t supported in Rise of Flight this “campaign” comprises a series of single player missions designed to be flown in chronological order. The campaign consists of nine missions and is based on McCudden’s experiences during the Battle of Cambrai.

You’ll fly the SE5a with No.56 Squadron from the prelude of the battle on the18th November until the end of the offensive on the 6th of December. Each missions includes media elements in a similar way to Vanders St. Mithiel campaign with period songs and film along with extracts from McCudden’s book.

Download the campaign from Box.net: Flying_Fury-Cambrai.zip

Game play tips
These missions attempt to recreate McCuddens memoirs as closely as possible so you can expect long flight times and a mix of terror and boredom as experienced by the real Royal Flying Corp pilots. Each mission follows an account given by McCudden and detailed in his book so some may have more action that others and the difficulty will vary.

Just remember to follow McCudden’s advice:

“My system was to always attack the Hun at his disadvantage if possible, and if I were attacked at my disadvantage l usually broke off the combat, for in my opinion the Hun in the air must be beaten at his own game, which is cunning. I think that the correct way to wage war is to down as many as possible of the enemy at the least risk, expense and casualties to one’s own side. At the same time, when one is taken at his advantage and one has to fight, one always has enough common sense to fight him like anything, for, as far as fighting the Hun in the air is concerned, nothing succeeds like boldness, and the Hun is usually taken aback when boldness is displayed.”

Passages from McCudden’s book have been used to set the scene at the start of each mission. If you successfully land at the end of a mission you will be presented with McCudden’s description of the actual flight.

To succeed you will need to land on your own side of the lines without receiving major damage to your aeroplane. Due to game limitations you will not succeed if you land with a heavily damaged engine or if you run out of fuel. There are no medals or promotion, the challenge is to see if you can do as well as McCudden and down eight enemies’s and survive.

Note that the front line at this time is situated to the east of the old frontline reflecting the German withdraw to the Hindenburg line so please ignore the archie and explosion over the old trenches. Also since LaviĆ©ville aerodrome dosn’t exist on the RoF map I’ve used Braizieux instead. Braizieux aerodrome was only a few fields west of LaviĆ©ville and the squadron move there in January 1918.

Good Hunting!
